Mark Foley Portuguese wine mateus the best …You can’t have sales unless somebody imports the wine and from a period of stagnation, new wines are beginning to be imported from areas like Dao, Douro, Palmela and Terras do Sado. This last named with Ribatejo and Estamadura are the two big areas beginning to appear on our shelves with inexpensive wines of character, while the more traditional areas like the Douro are producing top end wines of international quality. The Wicklow Wine Company (0404 66767 – they do mail order) leads the way with over 20 wines, including a number it imports directly. Wines of the Week Casa do Lago €10.95 Castelao & Trincideira Ribatejano, Portugal Wicklow Wine Company Another two unfamiliar grapes, Castelao and Trincideira, and we are still only scratching the surface. Medium-bodied red, round and well-balanced. Aromas of raspberries and dark fruit, the wine is juicy and spicy with a good finish. As they say in football, a utility wine that could play in a number of positions. |

Party Wines - Decent hooch at around €10 for your festive bash Tom Doorley …I adore the very slightly off-dry style of Cuvée Orelie 2002 Coteaux l’Ardeche (€7.95, Wicklow Wine Company) which makes it so pleasant to drink, while the same producer’s Pinot Noir Vignerons Ardechois 2000 (€10.50, Wicklow Wine Company) is gloriously different, properly varietal in character, and very keenly priced. |
