John Wilson picks up something for the weekendNieport Redoma, Douro 2001 €32.00 The Douro is better known for producing port, but in recent years, some superb table wines have begun to emerge. This is one of my all-time favourite wines, and worth every penny if you like wines with structure, and a few tannins. This is not a big wine, but it does have real complexity, with just-ripe damsons and blackcurrants, and deeply satisfying peppery tannins on a dry finish. Keep it a few years, or decant it and drink with a plain roast beef. Available from the Wicklow Wine Co |

A tough job, but….
Joe Breen This time of year sees a wave of wine tastings. Joe Breen dives in ...Four small but discerning operations – Wicklow Wine Company, Tyrell Wines, Wineknows and Inis Wines – were showing new wines and some old reliables. It was the first time they had come together to show their wines, and so successful was the event, said Michael Anderson of Wicklow Wine Company, that they will probably do it again. Pooling their resources meant they could reach a wider audience and get the message across of “small companies doing amazing wines at good prices”. He added that the four companies were now looking at ways they could help each other to compete with bigger operations. Certainly, there was a buzz in the packed room as we tasted some cracking wines, all of which are sourced individually, often from small producers. Wicklow Wine Co 0404 – 66767, wicklowwineco@eircom.net Wines available from Wicklow Wine Company, Main Street, Wicklow Michael Anderson and his partner, Ben Mason, of Wicklow Wine Company, got us of to a galloping start with a couple of remarkable German Rieslings from the Mosel vineyards of Max Ferd Richter, including a wonderfully honeyed Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese 2003 (€19.50), which clocks in at a remarkably lightweight 8 per cent alcohol. From the Loire, J Mourat’s Sacré Blanc 2004 (€13.50) was a tempting, bone-dry, fruity Chenin Blanc. Le Clos 2000 (€31.75), the high-end wine from the excellent Domain d’Aupilhac, in the Languedoc, justified its high-end price with a rich and mellow combination of flavours... |

All white nowDon’t dismiss white wine, says John Wilson. A good white offers just as much as red. Here are some of his favourites… [In] Germany, I tasted many superb Rieslings, but none better than the Dr von Bassermann-Jordan Deidesheim Riesling Trocken 2002, Grosses Gewachs Pfalz (0404 66767). One of the longest wine names you will come across, but also one of the very best, with hugely concentrated honeyed rich apple fruit, cut through with rapier-like citrus acidity. Magnificent wine. |

Have a glass of classCheap wines threaten the survival of the better middle-range ones. Mary Dowey nominates 10 worth splashing out for – and 10 for New Year Budgeters. Steer clear of the cheap plonk that is sloshing around the Irish market. Trade up a little – while we are still lucky enough to have a smashing assortment of wines worth trading up to. It may not last…. (From the) Top Ten €11 to €20 White Paul Zinck Pinto Blanc Prestige, Alsace 2002 One of my favourite Christmas wines. Ripe apple and honey tones pint to maturity – it may soon be time to move on to the next vintage – but when tasted in early November this was still a dazzler with lemon freshness in the finish. Available From: The Wicklow Wine Company White Pieropan Soave Classico 2003 Serious Soave at its most sensational. Pure hedonism, with layers of intense flavour and a refreshing, citrussy lift making for perfect balance. Available From: The Wicklow Wine Company White Clos de Saint Yves Savennières, Domaine des Baumard 2000 Of all the 20 wines, the one that excites me the most – and the 2000 vintage should be superb for quite some time, given the ageing potential of Savennières, one of the Loire’s best secrets. Gloriously intense, honeyed fruit gives way to a reverberating, bone-dry finish. Available From: The Wicklow Wine Company Red Chateau Viella Madiran Tradition, Alain Bortolussi 2001 Meaty Madiran from south-west France is a welcome winter alternative to mainstream reds. This is a comfort blanket of a wine, substantial and enveloping. Available From: The Wicklow Wine Company Cetena Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza 2001 Very grown-up red from ambitious producer Catena with welcome minerality and a firm, savoury core beneath a seductive cloak of plush fruit. Available From: The Wicklow Wine Company (From the) Top Ten €10.99 or less Red Pelican Bleu Grenache-Syrah, Vin de Pays d’Oc 2001 Cosy, warming southern French red with rich, brambly fruit and a lipsmacking, herb-tinged finish.
