| Ruby is the simplest yet often one of the most satisfying styles of young port; the Niepoort is a first rate example. In lesser hands Ruby can be unsophisticated and fiery, but here the wine has a mellow smoky nose, is fruity but firm on the mouth with tones of cooked plum, liquorice and fennel. The finish has a lovely savoury spiciness, with a touch of the bite that is a characteristic of this type of port. | |||

| Good tawny port is made by ageing the wine in small wooden barrels for many years. As time passes the colour changes to tawny and the flavours mutate; the fruit becomes concentrated and raisiny, a caramelized nuttiness emerges with richly spiced undertones. This ten year old has great complexity, with touches of candied orange, figs and nuts. Rich and intense, its initial sweetness gives way to a dry tangy finish. | |||

| Colheita means harvest in Portuguese and as the word implies is made from a single years grapes. It is thus vintage port, but made in the tawny manner, with a minimum of seven years in the barrel. In practice the wine is kept on the wood for much longer and Niepoort still has a stock of Colheita 1935! This is the peak of the tawny style and is very much a Niepoort speciality. It is a gorgeous wine, with a wonderful reductive aromatic nose followed by a blend of ripe figs and roses. | |||
